Despite a strong offensive performance, Frontier Community College came up just short against Oakland City University JV on Wednesday at FNB Field, falling 9-8. Oakland City recorded 12 hits, while the Bobcats collected 10 in the close contest.
Joaquin Gutierrez had an outstanding day at the plate, going a perfect 5-for-5 and driving in four runs.
The Mighty Oaks got on the board first with an RBI single in the top of the second. However, Frontier responded in the bottom half of the inning, taking a 4-2 lead. Gutierrez singled to drive in two runs, Justin Early hit a sacrifice fly to score another, and Dillon James drew a bases-loaded walk to add one more.
The Bobcats extended their lead to 5-2 in the third when Gutierrez lined a single down the left-field line for another RBI.
The Mighty Oaks fought back in the fifth, tying the game with a combination of a groundout, a double, and a balk. They then took the lead in the seventh with a bases-loaded walk, making it 6-5.
Oakland City's pitcher earned the win, allowing five hits and three runs over six innings while striking out nine and walking four. Ian Olivier-Beaulieu took the loss for Frontier, giving up five runs (four earned) on seven hits over five innings, striking out four and walking three. Oakland City's starter pitched one inning, allowing two hits and no runs while striking out one and walking one.
Frontier showed patience at the plate, drawing 10 walks in the game. Justin Early and Tony Woodie each recorded multiple hits, while Early and Nick Kaelin led the team with two walks apiece. The Bobcats also turned a double play on defense.
Oakland City's offense was well-balanced, with multiple players recording two hits. One hitter drove in two runs, while another stole two bases. Oakland City also turned a double play.
