Bobcats Split Doubleheader with Lake Land, Cap Off Sophomore Recognition Day with Walk-Off Win

The Bobcats Baseball team hosted Lake Land on a sunny Saturday afternoon at FNB Field in a doubleheader. It was also Sophomore Recognition Day at the ballpark, as 17 Bobcats (14 sophomores and three redshirt freshmen) were honored prior to the start of the first game. Among those recognized, eight are Academic All-Americans, including three student-athletes with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Fourteen of them hold a cumulative GPA above 3.0, and all have maintained a GPA above 2.7. The honorees were Isaiah Thompson, Cole Sims, Kyler Stokes, Justin Trucks, Byler Reither, Corbin Ausman, Keyonte Back, Ethan Payne, Joaquin Gutierrez, Ty Becker, Dawson Holtz, Nick Kaelin, Tony Woodie, Evan Hart, Gael Salinas, Wyatt Jenkins, and Caden Myers.
Game 1: Lake Land 11, Frontier 0
Lake Land took control in the top of the third inning with a strong offensive showing. Sharif Colon singled to bring in the first run, followed by a two-run double from Nathan Stuemke and a run-scoring single by Noah Dill. Lucas Bixby earned the win for the Lakers, delivering an impressive performance on the mound by allowing just two hits and no runs over six and one-third innings, striking out seven and walking one. Braxton Mathews took the loss for Frontier, giving up four runs on six hits in two and two-thirds innings. The Bobcats managed only two hits in the game, with Dillon James and Gael Salinas each recording one. Lake Land finished with 11 hits, highlighted by Colon's 4-for-5 day at the plate and Stuemke's three RBIs.
Game 2: Frontier 2, Lake Land 1 (11 innings)
In a dramatic extra-innings contest, Frontier earned a 2-1 walk-off win over Lake Land thanks to a clutch single from Ty Becker in the bottom of the 11th. The game featured strong pitching on both sides. Bailey Collins secured the win for the Bobcats, tossing a scoreless 11th inning with three strikeouts. Byler Reither started for Frontier and was dominant, giving up just one run on five hits over eight and two-thirds innings while striking out seven. Keyonte Back also contributed with shutout relief. Wyatt Brown took the loss for Lake Land, allowing the game-winning run in the 11th. Jacob McPherson started for the Lakers, going five and one-third innings and giving up one run on six hits. Frontier struck first in the third inning on a single by Becker, while Lake Land tied it in the fifth with a center-field single by Luke Schieltz. The Bobcats totaled 11 hits, led by Caden Myers who went a perfect 3-for-3, and Becker and Joaquin Gutierrez each added two hits.
The Bobcats are now 16-31 overall. Coach Matt McCue of Frontier Community College Baseball has announced that today's scheduled doubleheader against Westminster University JV has been cancelled. The Bobcats will now travel to Carterville to face John A. Logan College on Thursday, May 1, with first pitch set for 3 p.m. They will then take on Shawnee Community College at the same location, as that game has been relocated from SCC's campus in Ullin due to recent storm damage at Shawnee's baseball facility. Additionally, Saturday's scheduled doubleheader against Shawnee at FNB Field has been moved up to Friday, May 2, with first pitch set for 12 noon.
