The Frontier Community College Bobcats Volleyball team earned their first regular-season victory on Wednesday night, defeating Wabash Valley College in a thrilling five-set battle in front of an energetic home crowd. With the win, Frontier evened its record at 1-1 on the season, while the Warriors slipped to 0-2.
The Bobcats showed resilience after dropping the second and third sets, rallying to force a decisive fifth set and closing strong to secure the victory by scores of 25-22, 21-25, 23-25, 25-19, 15-8. The triumph also marked the first career win for new head coach Chet Snyder.
"Every region match is going to be a battle. College is just different, you've got to bring it every set, every play," said Snyder. "At times we do, and at times we don't. But I'm really proud of our effort to push through tonight. Winning here gets us to 1-1, and breaking that 31-match losing streak is nice. I thought we were resilient in coming back during the fourth set, and we trusted each other enough to finish it in the fifth. Very proud of our kids."
The home opener brought out a large, spirited crowd, something Snyder credited as a key part of the atmosphere.
"The fans were absolutely incredible," Snyder said. "It was a fun environment, and I know the girls felt supported."
Several Bobcats players echoed that excitement.
"I think we started off pretty strong, with everyone on the court giving it their all," said freshman middle hitter/right side Elliana Ames. "Our setters were making great connections with hitters, and we've been working on that a lot in practice."
Freshman outside hitter Evan Polsgrove added, "We did well in the first set, but in the second set we started off kinda slow. Then we progressed, and our serving and defense both got better as the match went on."
Next up, the Bobcats travel to West Burlington, Iowa, for the Jimmy John's Classic hosted by Southeastern Community College. They will play Friday and Saturday, then return home next week for two matches at Center Street. The Bobcats will host Rend Lake on Tuesday, September 2, and Lincoln Trail on Thursday, September 4. Both contests will be live streamed on Bobcat Nation YouTube channel.
